Active Acne

about You may hear the term “breakout” used to describe all forms of acne, but this is not always an accurate description. Not all types of acne spread across the skin. Clogged pores cause acne itself, this may be attributed to excess production of sebum, bacteria, hormones, dead skin cells and/or ingrown hairs.

Acne is usually associated with hormonal fluctuations experienced during your teenage years, but many adults experience acne, too.

There are several factors to consider before choosing which therapy will be right for you. First we will need to sit down with you for a thorough Consultation and Visia Skin Analysis to properly identify which type of acne, you’re suffering from and the root cause of the problem, this is key to successful treatment. Acne may be non-inflammatory or inflammatory. Our team of skin specialists can help you determine which treatment option is best for you.

At-home treatment

Before beginning any treatment for acne, we recommend booking a consultation with one of our certified skin specialists. They can help you determine the best method to treat active acne and prevent future breakouts. They will also make sure that the marks on your skin are indeed acne and not another condition.

The following active ingredients have been proven effective for the treatment of active acne:

Benzoyl Peroxide - Benzoyl peroxide works to treat and prevent acne by killing bacteria underneath the skin, as well as helping the pores shed dead skin cells and excess oil. Benzoyl peroxide works particularly well for inflammatory acne. Best for: Inflammatory acne. Recommended Products:

Sulphur - Sulfur helps dry out the surface of your skin to help absorb excess oil that may contribute to acne breakouts. It also dries out dead skin cells to help unclog your pores. Best for: Mild to moderate acne & sensitive skin. Recommended Products: ZO Complexion Clearing Mask

Salicylic Acid - Salicylic acid dissolves skin debris that clogs pores and exfoliates the skin. Salicylic acid works best for blackheads and whiteheads. When used regularly, this ingredient may also prevent future breakouts from forming. Best for: Non-inflammatory acne. Recommended Products: ZO Acne Treatment Pads, ZO Dual Action Scrub

Retinoids - Topical retinoids are another acne treatment with scar-smoothing benefits. In addition to speeding up your cell regeneration and improving your skin’s texture, retinoids can also help reduce discoloration and make scars less noticeable. Best for: Hormonal Acne Recommended Products: ZO Wrinkle & Texture Repair, ZO Retinol Skin Brightener
